How marginal tax brackets actually work

Tax brackets are marginal, not flat — only the income inside each band is taxed at that band's rate, not your whole income at the top rate. A common misread is thinking a raise that pushes you into a higher bracket lowers your take-home pay overall; it doesn't, because the higher rate only applies above the threshold.

Taxable income bandRateTax on that band
First $10,00010%$1,000
Next $30,000 (to $40,000)12%$3,600
Next $10,000 (to $50,000)22%$2,200

On $50,000 total income, the effective tax rate here is $6,800 ÷ $50,000 = 13.6% — well below the 22% marginal rate on the last dollar earned. Every calculator on this page applies its jurisdiction's real bracket structure the same way.
